As some of you know, the current operators of the Cerrito Theater had been having financial difficulties and the City Council met number of times to resolve this issue. Last night we had a fantastic turnout of supporters at the meeting. There were 75-80 supporters and standing room only. The theater operators Fischers and their staff were present.

All 30 speakers expressed support of the theater. They spoke of the dedication and sacrifice the Fischers brought to create an unique gem at the Cerrito Theater. Many voiced how much they loved the unique programming that Will “the Thrill” Viharo has brought to the Cerrito. All speakers wanted the theater to continue in the same way.

At 6:30 p.m. the City Council/Redevelopment Agency will go into closed session to discuss the future of the theater. Before closed session, however, there will be a chance for the community to comment. Would you like to see the city, which owns the theater, find an operator who will run the theater as a homey, pizza cinema? Do you have other thoughts? Now is the time to speak.

On Thursday, Speakeasy Theater announced that it plans to cease operating the Cerrito Theater and will help find and train a new operator for our beloved, historic theater. No closure date was announced and it is hoped that a new operator will be found, ensuring a smooth transition that avoids the theater going dark.
