“Little Shop of Horrors” (1986) at Rialto Cinemas Cerrito on Thursday, October 29

Come see the mean green mother from outer space!

The horror-musical-comedy “Little Shop of Horrors” was directed by Muppeteer Frank Oz, and stars Rick Moranis as Seymour, a hopeless and hapless employee of a flower shop owned by Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia). Seymour finds an unusual plant that shows up after a mysterious solar eclipse. He names the plant Audrey II, after his equally hopeless love interest Audrey (Ellen Greene). Audrey II soon proves to be very demanding, and not just in the sense that a hothouse orchid is hard to care for. In the meantime, the human Audrey is in a relationship with sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, played by Steve Martin. Can Seymour rescue Audrey from Orin, and the world from Audrey II?

“Little Shop of Horrors” features Levi Stubbs, lead singer of the R&B group The Four Tops, as the voice of Audrey II. Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, and Tisha Campbell play Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon, three “girl group” singers who act as a Greek chorus. Bill Murray, Christopher Guest, John Candy, and Jim Belushi all appear in smaller roles. The movie has humor, thrills, great songs, and a memorable villain.

“Little Shop of Horrors” will play only once at the Cerrito, on Thursday, October 30 at 6 pm. Moviegoers are strongly advised to buy advance tickets at the box office or online, as the movie may sell out. All seats are $9.00. Arriving early is a good idea, to choose your seat and order delicious food, wine, and beer.

“Some Like It Hot” (1959) at Rialto Cinemas Cerrito on Thursday, September 24

Come see this all-time great comedy!

Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) are down-on-their-luck musicians who go on the run after witnessing a mob hit in depression-era Chicago. They disguise themselves as women to join an all-girl band, where they meet Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), the band’s singer, and millionaire Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown). Things get complicated when Joe/Josephine adopts a third persona (Shell Oil) to try to seduce Sugar, and Osgood romantically pursues Jerry/Daphne. All the while, George Raft plays a parody of his tough-guy image as mob boss “Spats” Colombo.

“Some Like It Hot” was nominated for six Oscars: Billy Wilder for best director and best adapted screenplay (along with I.A.L. Diamond), Jack Lemmon for best lead actor, Charles Lang for best cinematography, Ted Haworth and Edward G. Boyle for best black-and-white art direction, and Orry-Kelly for best black-and-white costume design (for which it won the Academy Award). In 1989 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Roger Ebert called “Some Like It Hot” “one of the enduring treasures of the movies.” The American Film Institute selected it as the top comedy of all time in its “100 years… 100 Laughs” poll, and it was also ranked number 14 in its list of top 100 movies. BBC reviewer Michael Thomson called it “one of the greatest comedies ever” and “a story of increasingly wild absurdity.” Time Out magazine ranked it at number 7 in its poll of Top 100 Films.

“Groundhog Day” (1993) at Rialto Cinemas Cerrito on Thursday, April 30

Come see the movie that’s so great you can watch it again and again and again, at the Cerrito on Thursday, April 30, at 6 pm.

Phil (Bill Murray) is a Pittsburgh TV weather reporter who has been given an assignment he hates: to cover the annual Groundhog Day festival in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He goes with producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Eliot) with the intention of spending only one day there. And he does spend one day there: the same day, over and over and over. He’s stuck in a time loop, and he seemingly can’t escape from it no matter what he does. Will he ever be able to break the cycle?

“Groundhog Day” was selected to the National Film Registry in 1996. It’s widely regarded as one of the greatest film comedies, and it has become part of popular culture (saying that someone is stuck in Groundhog Day requires no explanation). Buddhist, Christian, and Jewish scholars have analyzed the film as a religious allegory. The story has even been adapted as a stage musical.

“Groundhog Day” will play only once at the Cerrito, on Thursday, April 30 at 6 pm. Moviegoers are strongly advised to buy advance tickets at the box office or online, as the movie may sell out. All seats are $9.00. Arriving early is a good idea, in order to choose your seat and order delicious food, wine, and beer.
