“Rear Window” (1954) at the Cerrito on Thursday, January 9 at 7:00

See one of Hitchcock’s greatest at the Cerrito on Thursday, January 9 at 7:00!

What a seemingly simple plot director Alfred Hitchcock lays before us! James Stewart, as a world news photographer, has broken his leg and is confined to a wheelchair in his Greenwich Village apartment. Not entirely alone, he is visited by his transcendentally beautiful girlfriend, played by Grace Kelly. He also has visits from a tart-tongued nurse, played by Thelma Ritter. At times, touches of humor lighten the situation.

The photographer, known as Jeff, becomes a voyeur as he looks through his apartment window onto a courtyard and into the apartments of his neighbors. The sweltering summer heat keeps all those windows open, giving him ample opportunity. His eyes become our eyes, and we, too, become voyeurs—taking in the spectrum of human behavior, including married bliss, unmarried frustration, artistic creation, and perhaps far worse .

At some point, Jeff becomes convinced something is terribly wrong in one of those apartments—but what exactly happened? Like Jeff, dangle helplessly in suspense.

In addition to the superb acting by Stewart, Kelly, and Ritter, first-rate performances are contributed by Raymond Burr and Wendell Corey.

It’s no wonder that critics and Hitchcock aficionados alike place “Rear Window” at the top, or very near it, of the director’s long list of masterpieces.
