“Galaxy Quest” (1999) at the Cerrito on Thursday, May 11, at 9:30

Have an outer space adventure at the Cerrito on Thursday, May 11 at 9:30!

In “Galaxy Quest,” the stars of a 1970s sci-fi show—now scraping a living through re-runs and sci-fi conventions—are beamed aboard an alien spacecraft. Believing the cast’s heroic on-screen dramas are historical documents of real-life adventures, the band of aliens (who are called Thermians) turn to the ailing celebrities for help in their quest to overcome the oppressive regime in their solar system.

With a glittering array of stars, “Galaxy Quest” boldly goes where few parodies have gone before.

Does Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith remind you of the heroic Capt. Kirk? Alan Rickman plays Alexander Dane, who portrays the Spock-like alien scientist Dr. Lazarus. There’s an added twist in that Dane, a former Shakespearean actor, deeply resents prostituting himself by appearing at low-rate sci-fi conventions; Rickman himself was a noted Shakespearean actor. Other stellar cast members include Sigourney Weaver and Tony Shalhoub.

Whether you’re a Trekkie, an anti-Trekkie, or have no idea what a Trekkie is, you’ll have a hilarious time at “Galaxy Quest.”

“Galaxy Quest” plays once only on Thursday, May 11 at 9:30 p.m. All seats are $9.00. Moviegoers are strongly advised to buy advance tickets at the box office or online, as many shows sell out. Arriving early is a good idea, in order to choose your seat and also order delicious food and wine or beer.
