Make “Roman Holiday” part of your Valentine’s Day celebration!

Audrey Hepburn became a star with this film, in which she played Princess Anne, weary of protocol and anxious to have some fun before she is mummified by “affairs of state.” On a diplomatic visit to Rome, Anne escapes her royal retainers and scampers incognito through the Eternal City. She happens to meet American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who, recognizing a hot news story, pretends that he doesn’t recognize her and offers to give her a guided tour of Rome. Naturally, Joe hopes to get an exclusive interview, while his photographer pal Irving (Eddie Albert) attempts to sneak a photo. And just as naturally, Joe falls in love with her. Filmed on location in Rome, Roman Holiday garnered an Academy Award for the 24-year-old Hepburn; another Oscar went to the screenplay, credited to Ian McLellan Hunter and John Dighton but actually co-written by the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo.

“Roman Holiday” plays once only on Thursday, February 12 at 7:00. All seats are $8.00. Moviegoers are advised to get advance tickets at the box office or online, as shows may sell out. Arriving early is a good idea, in order to choose your seat and also order delicious food and wine or beer.

Barbra Streisand’s role of a lifetime!

Barbra Streisand was born to play the title role in “Funny Girl” (1968). Streisand’s depiction of legendary entertainer Fanny Brice perfectly captures her own talent and relentless drive as well. Prior to the movie, Streisand had starred in the mega-hit Broadway show of the same name.

“Funny Girl” tells the story of comedienne Fanny Brice, who fast-talked her way into show business, certain that she’s going to become “The Greatest Star.” She was an instant hit in the Ziegfeld Follies and soon fell into a tempestuous relationship with big-time gambler Nicky Arnstein, played by Omar Sharif. Their love affair is the red-hot center of the movie.

Full of showstopping musical numbers by Streisand, including “My Man,” “Second Hand Rose,” “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” the movie swept the Oscars, winning Best Picture, Best Actress for Streisand, and three other Oscars. It was also the top-grossing movie of the year.

“The Wiz” (1979) at the Cerrito, Thursday, December 11, at 7 p.m.

See a whole new Oz, with Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Richard Pryor!

You’ve been to Oz before, but never like this. Come see a fantastic, reimagined musical that sees Dorothy, played by Diana Ross, transported by a snowstorm into a land that is entirely new to her.

She and her little dog find themselves in a phantasmagorical version of Manhattan. They make new friends: a scarecrow from a junkyard, played by Michael Jackson. Also a broken-down tinman from a decaying amusement park, played by Nipsey Russell. And the third new friend is a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) who has been pretending to be a statue.

The four of them have many amazing adventures and close calls with the Wicked Witch of the West, as they go off in search of the Wiz—Richard Pryor—who can grant their wishes.

“The Wiz” was a huge hit on Broadway, and then was made into this delightful film, directed by Sidney Lumet.
