Thank you for the good times! Celebrating Cerrito Theater’s 75th Birthday

“There were a lot of smiling faces and high spirits in the packed Cerrito Theater Thursday night as El Cerrito’s art deco landmark celebrated its 75th birthday.

Outside the theater, a search light on the sidewalk sent a rotating beam across the sky, while a vintage automobile sat parked in front of the ticket booth.

Inside, the festive occasion featured live 1930s music by the four-member band, “Any Reason,” and several patrons in ’30s attire. Dave Weinstein, president of the Friends of the Cerrito Theater, gave a brief history of the theater and its resurrection before the evening’s main event, a screening of the Oscar-winning Frank Capra film, You Can’t Take it With You.”

Cerrito Classics is showing an extra classic in December (see also “Come celebrate Cerrito Theater’s 75th anniversary on Dec 13th.”)

A heart-warming story set in small-town America in the 1940’s, “A Christmas Story” tells how 9-year-old Ralphie has to convince his parents, teacher, and Santa that a Red Ryder BB-gun is the perfect Christmas gift for him.  The stars are Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, and Darren McGavin. Based on the memoir by Jean Shepherd, ” In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.”

Ralphie’s visit to Santa may be the most surprising and original Santa scene of any movie.  It’s Christmas, with a twist.  Don’t miss it!

Tickets are going fast for the Cerrito’s gala 75th anniversary! Buy your tickets now online or at the box office for the celebration on Thursday, December 13 at 7 p.m.

The Friends of the Cerrito Theater invites you to a very special party! There will be live music from Cookie Reese’s “Any Reason,” (formerly known as “Hot Popcorn”), the same wonderful quartet that entertained us at the Open House in 2002. We will have a special program before the featured showing:

You Can’t Take It With You

The featured classic is a gem from the era and won Oscars in 1938 for both Best Picture and Best Director for the renowned director Frank Capra. A screwball comedy, “You Can’t Take It With You” involves a zany family and a romance. James Stewart stars with Jean Arthur, and a great supporting cast including Lionel Barrymore.
