The Cerrito Theater will participate in this year’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day by showing “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” on Monday, January 18 at 5:00 p.m.

This movie is being shown as a PBS Independent Lens pop-up. It has an award for top documentary from the National Board of Review, and was chosen as audience favorite at the Riverrun International Film Festival. Admission will be free, and seating will be first-come, first served.

This screening will be part of an entire day of activities honoring Dr. King, including a parade from City Hall starting at 9:30 a.m., and a rally and program at the El Cerrito High School Performing Arts Center starting at 10:30 a.m.

Please note that the City of El Cerrito Recreation Activity Guide listed the movie time in error. It will show at 5:00, not at the time listed in the guide.

You can see the trailer here, and you can learn more about the movie and event here and here.

Happy New Year from the Friends of the Cerrito Theater!

header_600w2016 is almost here. Unfortunately, due to contractual obligations with the studios, the Cerrito Theater won’t be showing a classic movie in January.

The good news is that we’re working on selecting movies for the rest of the year. We expect the Cerrito Classics series to resume on Thursday, February 11. We will make an announcement when we know more.

In the meantime, have a Happy New Year and a great January!

“The Shop Around the Corner” (1940) at the Cerrito, Thursday, December 10, at 9:30 p.m.

Coming up…save the date!

Visit “The Shop Around the Corner: for a warm holiday glow!

A charming Christmas-time story about romance turns the clock back to an earlier day—when shopping was done at small, specialty stores, not from big boxes or over the internet, “The Shop Around the Corner” foreshadows a major hit movie–“You’ve Got Mail,” which starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Here, we’ve got James Stewart (to whom Tom Hanks is often compared) and Margaret Sullavan as a young couple who are falling in love–pen pals–without ever having seen each other. That’s what they think. In actuality, these two people are co-workers at a gift shop with a relationship that verges on abrasiveness.

Deftly directed by Ernst Lubitsch, “Shop Around the Corner” also stars Frank Morgan as the overbearing boss in the gift shop.

It’s a Classic that will bring just the right note of nostalgia to your holiday time.

“The Shop Around the Corner” plays once only on Thursday, December 10 at 9:30 p.m. All seats are $8.50. Moviegoers may get advance tickets at the box office or online. Arriving early is a good idea, in order to choose your seat and also order delicious food and wine or beer.

Scene

Open from 4:30 until 10:00, Scene wine/food bar offers a special menu, including delicious panini, salads, flatbread, and desserts. You can enjoy them there, or have them brought to your seat while you watch the movie.
